The Department of Justice orders cuts off a lifeline for people in immigration detention, families navigating a complex immigration system, and some unaccompanied children

WHEN: Monday, 1/27/25 at 1:30 PM ET/10:30 AM PT
ZOOM REGISTRATION HERE

Washington—Immigration law experts will respond to the Department of Justice’s recent order to immediately halt three federally funded legal access programs and the Counsel for Children Initiative. Representatives from organizations that administer the impacted programs, and a participant of one of the programs will speak about the impact of this abrupt pause in services.

Speakers will also provide a holistic picture of the current state of immigration in the United States in the first days of the Trump administration, connecting the threat of mass deportation raids to recent actions that strip away due process for immigrant families, children, and individuals.

Registration is required. Questions from members of the press are welcome.

How is the Department of Justice’s order being enforced?

What are lawyers seeing in detention centers?

How will legal organizations defend the due process and civil liberties of immigrants and American citizens caught in mass enforcement actions?

Speakers:

  • Michael Lukens, Executive Director, Amica Center for Immigrant Rights
  • Azadeh Erfani, Policy Director, National Immigrant Justice Center
  • Abdoulaziz Djibril, Legal Orientation Program Participant and Amica Center for Immigrant Rights Board Member
  • Laura St. John, Legal Director, Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project
  • Andrew Nietor, Counsel for Children Initiative Provider, Law Office of Andrew K. Nietor
