The brutal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents today highlights the danger that comes with militarized law enforcement being set free to conduct their operations with impunity.

We cannot allow this to continue.

Every time the government allows ICE to conduct mass raids and targeted fear campaigns, all of us are less safe. The victim gunned down by ICE agents today was doing what so many of us have done this past year – hold law enforcement accountable by observing their actions. Her murder highlights, more than ever, the need to completely overhaul this country’s immigration system.

“The Trump regime spreads false and xenophobic narratives that immigrants are dangerously invading the US,” said Michael Lukens, Executive Director at Amica Center. “But as we’ve seen today, their hateful rhetoric, paired with no accountability for ICE, makes communities less safe. We have seen immigrants die in detention, people injured in lawful protests, ICE routinely using excessive force during arrests, and now the murder of an observer.”

Immigrants are not invading our country. ICE is invading our neighborhoods and harming our community members. Amica Center will continue to fight for the rights, safety, and unity of our communities because everyone has the right to be free, safe, and supported.
