Volunteers do not need to be certified translators or interpreters. However, strong proficiency for translation and full fluency for interpretation in both English and another language are required.
Our most frequent translation and interpretation needs are for Spanish-speakers. However, since we work with people from a variety of countries, requiring a variety of language needs, we occasionally have both written translation and remote interpretation opportunities for languages other than Spanish.
Document translation & live interpretation opportunities are sent out weekly for Spanish and as needed for other languages. Volunteer translators can sign up to translate documents as it works for their schedule. Volunteer interpreters can choose to interpret several calls per week, once per month, or anything in between.
All document translation opportunities are completed remotely. Most live interpretation calls are completed remotely, however, there will be occasional opportunities for in-person interpretation either at Amica Center’s DC office or a detention facility in the region.
No training is required for document translation volunteers and most interpretation volunteers. We do require a virtual training for volunteer interpreters who would like to interpret a mental health evaluation and haven’t done so previously.
